Sure, this is also a frontal attack on the Amazon suite of web services - not only EC2 (Google responds in a form of Python run-time, other languages will arrive soon I guess), but S3 (vs. Google File System), and SimpleDB (vs. BigTable after all ;-)).

OK, I should have checked before submitting. It's official now - Google App Engine it's more akin to Amazon EC2. Missed by two characters and one digit. :-))

I've had a cursory look at the BigTable paper. Granted, such an API wouldn't be a big hit among the general developer population and the technology is too low-level for Google's take on end-user services.
The argument went: If Amazon S3 can pull it off, Google BigTable (wrapped in a nicer, higher-level API package) could as well.
Maybe Google will release G-Drive? ;-)

I'd agree with TechCrunch: BigTable will be offered as a web service to the developer community. Campfire One is a place for such announcements.
It's time for Google to attract 3rd party apps hosted on their servers. :-)
